Again, my wife needs to take responsibility for these pieces. She ran an “in house daycare” for toddlers and she insisted I put up Christmas lights which necessitated my pruning our Japanese Plum tree. After work I would take my ladder and pruning shears and trim the tree down so I could later string lights around the tree. Parents would drop by to pick up their kids and I would tell them that contrary to popular belief, I was not pruning the tree but harvesting switches. “Would you like one?”
So over the years I have been harvesting the Japanese Plum tree one piece at a time. I started with making some beautiful shillelaghs. Then moved on to creating smaller “what not” pieces , some amazing paper weight, wooden balls and some lucky charms.
In addition to the Japanese Plum I have been able to harvest Mountain Ash, Hazelnut, three different apple trees, Vine Maple, Rhododendron, White Birch and Wild Cherry. I have been able to produce some amazing canes and walking sticks over the years from all these different sources.
